Unbelief Appears Exaggerated, Leaders Need to Tend to Their Flock
The Christmas Poll 2025 conducted by BIG DATA POLL finds more than 9 in 10 (91.6%) U.S. registered voters still celebrate the holiday. The survey findings also indicate large majorities of voters still largely celebrate and view Christmas as a religious holiday and reflect on the birth of Jesus as the Christ, despite whether they attend religious services.
While the results of annual trackers were largely or only marginally unchanged from last year, The Christmas Poll 2025 also asked about voters’ beliefs in God, in Jesus as the Son of God, and asked those who are unsure why it is they are.
“The Christmas Spirit is alive and well among registered voters nationwide,” BIG DATA POLL Director Rich Baris, said. “In fact, belief in God remains strong in America and the results of these additional questions are fascinating.”
“That being said, the findings continue to suggest that there is a spiritual void ‘the church’ and church ‘leaders’ are failing to fill.”
When asked, 78.8% of all registered voters indicated they believe in God, just 12.8% below the percentage who say they celebrate Christmas. Meanwhile, 11.6% indicated they do not believe in God and roughly 1 in 10 (9.5%) are unsure. Of those who are unsure, 39.7% said “God probably exists, but I have a lot of doubt” and 21.3% said “God probably exists, but I have a little doubt”. Still, 38.9% indicated “God probably does not exist, but I’m not sure”.
“Believers believe in the eternal soul and believers Jesus Christ is the Son of God, in salvation,” Director Baris added. “If that’s true, then church ‘leaders’ should better focus on tending to their flock because a significant amount of would-be believers are wandering alone in the wilderness.”
The results indicate a minimum of 6 in 10 among those who are unsure about God’s existence think it’s likely He does exist but have varying doubts, while even the 4 in 10 remaining have doubts God does NOT exist.
Of those who belief in God, 92.5% believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Only 4.7% said no and 2.9% were unsure, further supporting the claim America remains largely a Christian nation.
Methodology
The Christmas Poll is an annual tradition conducted for the Public Polling Project to gauge how Americans celebrate the holiday. BIG DATA POLL interviewed 3,977 registered voters nationwide from December 21 to December 22, 2025. Interviews conducted online are sourced through Lucid (CINT) and live-agent phone interviews including P2P SMS and text-to-online are sourced from the Aristotle National Voter File Database. Participants who opted for text-to-online were given 24 hours to complete the interview. Interview details plotted on maps can be reviewed by hovering and clicking on the locator pins. Results were weighted for sex, age, race and ethnicity, education, and geography. The overall sampling error is ±1.6% at a 95% confidence level. It is important to note that sampling errors for subgroups are higher. All BIG DATA POLL publicly conducted surveys are crowdfunded via the Public Polling Project, supplemented if necessary by BIG DATA POLL and are NOT funded by or affiliated with any candidate, campaign, committee, or political entity.
